  1. What is a dual voice coil speaker, exactly?
A dual voice coil speaker has 2 inputs, one for the left channel and one for the right. This allows a single speaker to reproduce both channels of information. Some have dual tweeters to provide for stereo separation from a single speaker.

  2. Why use a dual voice coil speaker?
Use for small locations where 2 speakers will not fit, or simply to save money.

  3. Why not just use a single speaker?
Because you will lose more or less musical information depending on how the music is recorded. For example, if the voice all comes from the left channel, and you only have the right one wired up, you get the music with no lyrics.

  4. Is there a downside to using a single speaker for stereo reproduction?
Yes. Stereo separation must suffer since you have no physical separation between speakers. In addition sound quality will be somewhat diminished by only having the surface area of one woofer cone operating instead of two.
  5. Can't I just hook both channels together to feed one speaker?
No. If you don't blow up your amplifier it will sound very bad

  6. How do I hook up my (5.1, 6.1, 7.1) channel receiver for distributed sound?
You will use the left and right main channels to feed the extra speakers. It is normally more convenient to use the 'B' speaker switch to feed the extra speakers. Using the 'B' speaker switch allows for using the system in surround mode for your main system and stereo  output for your distributed audio. Your amplifier may also have dedicated outputs for a second zone, labled zone 2, etc. ***DANGER!!! DO NOT hook more than one extra pair of 8 ohm speakers to the 'B' speaker output without adding some form of impedance compensation. Depending on your amplifier, it could die within a fraction of a second. See our article on impedance compensation.

  7. What is the easiest method to provide impedance compensation?
Use impedance matching in-wall volume controls. This also provides the convenience of being able to control the volume of each speaker in the room it is mounted in. You may also use an impedance matching speaker selector, some of which come with individual volume controls and dual amplifier capability.

  8. How do in wall speakers mount?
The speakers come with a template for cutting the hole. If prewiring you may use a rough in kit to leave the correct size hole. The speakers come with a built in system that clamps to the edges of the mounting hole. You simply remove the grill, fit the speaker into the hole, then turn the four screws at which point the clamps deploy automatically, and tighten until the speaker is clamped in place.
