In Wall Cable
Using CL2 or CL3 cable is a legal
requirement for installing in wall, and there are other advantages to
properly rated cable. It is twisted internally for self shielding, and
has a tough outer shell for easier pulling without damaging the cable.
16 gauge bulk speaker wire is most commonly used. Larger cable is
better for various reasons (see our article on speaker wire
) and is recommended for runs over 50 feet or very high power runs. 22
gauge cable should only be used for the very shortest runs, or where
hiding the cable is critical. Due to the adverse effects of the
resistance and impedance of 22 gauge cable, it is not the best for
general use.
