Do you really need in wall speaker cable?
Is it going in a wall? If the answer is yes, then you need in wall cable. There are enough differences that you may seriously regret using standard speaker wire in wall. Click here to read our in depth article on speaker wire. In addition, it is an illegal install if the cable is not CL2Xor higher rated.
Do you have any special installation needs?
If you are doing a standard home install, a CL2 or CL3 rated cable will fill the bill. If you are doing a commercial install, installing in a hospital or in a Plenum, a multi-family dwelling or other special circumstances see this topic on cable ratings. In addition you will need to look up the applicable codes for your area.
How far will you be running the cable?
The most often used size of cable is 16 gauge, but the recommended size may vary according to how far you intend to go. For average use you may use 16 gauge for up to 100 feet, although with some losses. Click here to see our size/distance chart.
Will you be running close to power or other cables that may radiate a signal?
Don't worry about low signal stuff such as cable TV cables. Try to absolutely avoid running parallel to power cables unless your cable is a foot or 2 away from them. If you simply can't avoid it, you may want to buy shielded cable. The official recommendation for speaker cables may be a little closer, but my recommendation is the farther away the better. Once the wallboard is installed changes become much more difficult.
Do you need 2 or 4 conductor cable?
This really depends on the job you are doing. If you are wiring one average house, once, it may be most effective to stay with 2 wire cable. Doing business as a custom installer we would run 4 wire cable to the volume control, and split off from there with two conductor cable to the speakers. This way is more efficient and cost effective when you do installs on a regular basis.
